Enhancing the Safety of Your Playground Playground are one of the best ways for families to enjoy outdoor fun. Playgrounds are fantastic source of outdoor fun, and are generally long lasting pieces of equipment that are worth the cost for the vast amount of fun that they offer. It is so much fun to choose slides and swings for a play space, but safety has to be a major concern for anyone working on a playground structure. To enhance the safety of your playground structure, there are a few simple steps that you can take. The first thing to keep in mind is just how safe the structure of the playground and the layout is for those that will play on it. Openings in the slats or spaces between the structures and the protruding portions of the play structure are often not thought of when considering safety. While of course you shouldn’t leave large spaces a child could drop out of, also be sure that you don’t have any gaps where a child could wedge their leg or arm in. Sharp corners are bad for scrapes and bruises, so make sure to sand down all corners, especially if they are made of hard substances. Thinking about safety should then move onto how you will surface the playground area in your yard or community park space. Cement, and even just dirt or grass, are not sufficient when it comes to a surface that is safe in an area with a high fall risk. One of the typical alternatives is rubber mulch, as it offers a softer and more cushioned surface that doesn’t degrade over time. There are now rubber playground surfacing that is pour in place, so that you get all the benefits of rubber mulch, but without the negative side effects. Because it is poured, it is in a straight and even line. Choosing a safe surfaces cuts down of many problems that occur when playing on a playground.

The last component is related to surfacing, but it is that the amount of surfacing is sufficient for your playground. For safety, make sure the safe surfacing is under all of the structures of your playground. The standard distance that safe rubber surfaces should extend off the playground is 6 feet. This includes 6 feet off of the fullest extension of the swings, so that even if a child were to jump, the rubber surface would be there to protect them.
